Anki DRIVE Races into 2014 with New Support Items and Upgrades

Anki DRIVE has been on store shelves for just over two months and the reactions from kids, parents, grandparents and gamers alike has been incredible. People tell us they love interacting with each other, they love being away from a TV or computer screen, and most of all, they love that it’s fun. And that’s the heart of what we aim to do - make gameplay more fun.

Drivers like you have raced roughly 42 million laps around the Anki DRIVE track - the equivalent of doing the Monaco Grand Prix almost 540,000 times. The AI car hasn’t made it easy, either. When set to “hard,” the AI car has won 9 out of 10 times.

The best part is, we’re just getting started. We’re excited to let you know that starting today, you’ll see an updated version of the app that offers new weapons, support items, and upgrades that give you the ultimate flexibility, and ability to be strategic in your gameplay. This is another example of how Anki DRIVE is a videogame that you can play in the real world.

Because DRIVE is software-based, we can evolve the gameplay throughout the life of the game, to keep it fun and engaging - no matter how long you’ve been playing.

Now there are up to 20 different upgrades with which you can customize your car over time with this update. We also added some cool new weapons and support items. No matter what you choose in the app, the car will embody that on the track, including things like:

  • Reverse Drive. Now you can do a 180 turn and quickly change directions on the track - perfect for quickly getting behind someone so you can fire your weapon and take them out.
  • Kinetic Brake. Come to a dead stop on the track by engaging your emergency brake, and watch the car behind you fly by.
  • EMP. The electromagnetic pulse. Have you seen Ocean’s 11? It’s like that. You’ll damage all opponents nearby as you whiz past.
  • Horn. You can force people out of your way by holding down the horn. The sound is cool, but the effects are even better.

We also made it easier to switch between upgrades so you’re no longer locked into a specific choice. The software update will be available to all Anki Drivers, so make sure you download the latest version of the app to experience the new play today.

One of the best parts about Anki DRIVE is that we solved the core technological problems that allow us to continue building upon and enhancing what we debuted in October – the possibilities are endless, and this is just the beginning. Thanks for driving with us!
